Symphony Nova Scotia
March 28, 2025, 7:30pm at Beacon United Church
Earl Lee, conductor
Daniel Bolshoy, guitar
The Hear! Here! Society is thrilled to present Symphony Nova Scotia, conducted by the renowned Earl Lee, with internationally acclaimed guitarist Daniel Bolshoy for an unforgettable evening of orchestral brilliance. Returning to Beacon United Church on March 28, 7:30pm, one night only, don’t miss your chance to experience this extraordinary performance!
Earl Lee joins Symphony Nova Scotia on tour, offering a rare chance to experience this exceptionally talented, young conductor as he continues his rise to prominence on the international stage. Winner of the 2022 Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award, renowned Korean-Canadian conductor and cellist Earl Lee has captivated audiences worldwide with his bold artistry and deep musical insight. Currently Music Director of the Ann Arbor Symphony and Assistant Conductor of the Boston Symphony, Lee has led performances at Tanglewood, Symphony Hall, and beyond. Earl previously held positions as Associate Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony and as the Resident Conductor of the Toronto Symphony.
Daniel Bolshoy
Daniel Bolshoy, an Israeli-Canadian virtuoso classical guitarist and celebrated educator, returns to join forces with Symphony Nova Scotia for two virtuoso guitar showpieces. Having performed with over 60 orchestras internationally, Bolshoy’s performances are praised for their passion, precision, and extraordinary lyricism.
The program features Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, one of the most beloved guitar concertos, capturing the fragrance of magnolias, the singing of birds, and the gushing of fountains. Its haunting slow movement features a delicate interplay between guitar and English horn, a passage immortalized in Miles Davis’ Sketches of Spain.
Bolshoy will also perform Chris Brubeck’s Affinity: Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra, bringing a modern brilliance to the program, filled with rhythmic vitality and dazzling soloist-orchestra interplay.
Symphony Nova Scotia is featured in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2, composed during a time of personal turmoil as his hearing loss worsened. Far from despairing, this symphony brims with wit, energy, and playful exuberance—though one early critic described it as “a hideously writhing, wounded dragon that refuses to die”. Beethoven, ever the rebel, had the last laugh.
This concert is a rare opportunity to experience the synergy of a world-class orchestra, a visionary conductor, and a virtuoso guitarist in the intimate setting of Beacon United Church.
